At Salop Design & Engineering, our advanced Hydraulic Presses play a vital role in the precision forming of deep drawn metal components. With two 630-tonne and one 500-tonne double-action hydraulic presses, we provide scalable, high-accuracy forming solutions for sectors such as automotive, defence, rail and aerospace.

Why Use Hydraulic Presses for Deep Drawing?

Hydraulic presses offer a controlled, uniformed application of force across the entire stroke, which is critical in deep drawing where material flow must be managed precisely to avoid wrinkling, tearing, thinning or cracking. Unlike mechanical presses, which deliver peak force only at the bottom of the stroke, hydraulic systems maintain constant tonnage throughout the entire range of motion, ensuring consistent part geometry and material integrity.

Technical Benefits:

Adjustable RamSpeeds

Hydraulic presses allow for variable ram speeds, enabling a slow approach and draw phase, which reduces strain on the material and tools — ideal for drawing high-strength steels, stainless steels, or non-ferrous alloys.

Longer Dwell Time at Bottom Dead Centre (BDC)

Hydraulic presses can pause at the bottom of the stroke, allowing the material to settle and reduce springback. This is especially beneficial when forming high-strength, heat-treated materials or producing parts with complex contours.

Tool Protection& Safety

Integrated pressure monitoring systems and overload protection help prevent die damage and enhance operator safety. Hydraulic presses are also generally quieter and require less maintenance than mechanical counterparts.

Blankholder Pressure Control

Our double-action hydraulic presses provide independent control of both the punch and the blankholder, a key advantage in deep drawing where balanced pressure is essential to prevent material puckering, thinning and distortion. The integrated hydraulic cushions feature variable stroke capability, offering precise control of material flow and enabling optimal forming conditions across a range of part geometries and thicknesses.

High Repeatability &Form Accuracy

The precision hydraulic system ensures positional accuracy, enabling production of parts with tight dimensional tolerances and excellent surface finish—vital for components such as brake shoes, body panels, fuel tanks or housings.

Application Example:

We use our 630T and 500T hydraulic presses daily to produce deep-drawn brake components for leading Tier 1 suppliers, including safety critical parts for fuel tanks and braking systems. These parts demand both dimensional precision and material integrity, which our hydraulic systems deliver consistently, even across high-volume production.
